It’s Equal Pay Day – Actions you can take
Today, March 15th, is Equal Pay Day. It marks the great divide in pay between men and women on the basis of sex.
But not only sex. There’s a tremendous divide based on race as well.
The graphic above shows the disparity.
- In New York, for every $1 a white, non-Hispanic man earns, a NY woman only earns an average of 85.6¢. For women of color, this gap is much wider.
- In New York, for every $1 a white, non-Hispanic man earns, an Asian American woman only earns 85.5¢! It is time to end the wage gap and demand Equal Pay now.
- In New York, for every $1 a white, non-Hispanic man earns, a White woman only earns 80.4¢! It is time to end the wage gap and demand Equal Pay now!
- In New York, for every $1 a white, non-Hispanic man earns, a Black woman only earns 64.3¢! It is time to end the wage gap and demand Equal Pay now!
- In New York, for every $1 a white, non-Hispanic man earns, a Latina woman only earns 56.1¢! It is time to end the wage gap and demand Equal Pay now!
BQNOW is a member of the PowHerNY coalition. They’ve set up an easy to use link so you can tell Governor Hochul, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie that you think it’s time to change things.
Something we forget is that it isn’t just the paycheck that separates women and men, it’s universal childcare and fair wages for childcare providers. Without childcare no parent is able to fulfill requirements of work without consequences. Just the possibility that a woman could become pregnant is enough to keep her from promotions or higher job titles.
So while you’re writing your letter, remember that every NYS Assembly and Senate seat is up for grabs this November. Let every incumbent and every candidate who wants your vote know that Universal Child Care and Fair Pay for Child Care Providers is very important to you. Ask where they stand. Ask incumbents how they voted. Hold them accountable. Make them earn your vote!!!!
Are you angry yet????
