Brooklyn-Queens NOW Endorsements

Earlier this year the BQNOW membership was asked to recommend candidates to consider for BQNOW endorsements.

We developed and sent a questionnaire geared toward this year’s NYC Primary races to the people you recommended.

On June 15th BQNOW made the following 2 endorsements:

  1. Queens Council District 25: Shekar Krishnan (incumbent). Also see: facebook.com/VoteShekar/
  2. Queens Council District 29: Lynn Schulman (incumbent). Also see:  lynnschulman.com/about-lynn

We encourage you to vote for these candidates, to work on their campaigns and, if they are successful, to get involved in their election in the November General Election.

There are other NYC Council candidates we looked at but cannot endorse because they did not respond to our questionnaire. We encourage you to consider them when making your decision. All are pro-choice. We have worked with most of the incumbents over the past 2 years. Check out their websites, ask questions, make your decision.

NOTE: Not all districts have a primary race. There are some primary races we chose not to consider because they did not support abortion rights, LGBTQ rights or were silent on those issues.

Here are the candidates we recommend you consider when making your choice. We emphasize that all are pro-choice.

  • Queens District Attorney: Melinda Katz.  We have worked with her for several years, most recently on her far-ranging programs to address sex and labor trafficking.
  • Queens District 19: Tony Avella & Christopher Bae. Each are pro-choice. Avella has NYS Senate experience. They are challenging ardent Anti-Choice incumbent Vicki Paladino.
  • Queens District 22: Tiffany Caban. Caban is the incumbent. She supports free abortion on demand and was the lead sponsor of legislation protecting abortion availability and care in NYC following the Dobbs decision.
  • Queens District 26: Julie Won (incumbent) & Hailie Kim While both are pro-choice, Won co-sponsored the NYC Abortion Rights Act.
  • Brooklyn District 34: Jennifer Gutierrez (incumbent). Gutierrez chairs the Progressive Caucus. One of her top priorities is universal child care. She is endorsed by Working Families Party.

Early voting began June 17th and ends Sunday, June 25th. To find your Early Voting Site location and times, go to: https://findmypollsite.vote.nyc/

Remember: We can never go back! We must protect our rights. To do that, we must elect candidates who understand that life in not an “If I win, you must lose” situation. Rather, there is room at the table for all of us. When one suffers, all suffer. GET INVOLVED!
